New year, New Theme

by Sean on Feb.06, 2009, under Stuff, Tech, Web

I’ve finally found a new Wordpress theme that I like – So out with the old fixed-width(ish) browns & greens, and in are the new dynamic-width whites & blacks of the Atahualpa Theme.

I’ve also replaced the default banner images of fruit & trees with some banners snipped from my photo collection.  They’ve turned out much better than I thought they would – Not bad for 5 mins work with Paint.NET :)

Google EPIC Fail

by Sean on Jan.31, 2009, under Tech, Web

Looks like Google have cocked things up BIG TIME for a lot of people.  Every search result is tagged as “harmful” so you can’t click through to your destination…

Google EPIC Fail

Update: Looks like someone at Google noticed.  Everything’s back to normal for me now…

Google Reader is really starting to bug me

by Sean on May.06, 2008, under Tech, Web

There’s an annoying bug in Google Reader that causes the unread article count to increment before you’re actually able to view the article.

Eg:

Google-Reader-Annoyance

The problem first reared its ugly head a few months back, with it happening more frequently over the past week or so.

Is it just me, or is it annoying the hell out of anyone else too? :)

Oops – Looks like I was hosting dodgy content after all!…

by Sean on Feb.23, 2008, under Tech, Web

After asking for more info regarding the warning from Google, Stopbadware.org sent me a review of my website. It looks like I’d been hit by a WordPress xmlrpc exploit before I’d had chance to patch for it. Oops!

My transparent bridging post had been altered to include a bit of HTML code to call an external URL in an IFRAME. I’ve no idea what was on that page, but no doubt it was malicious content targeting unpatched web browsers.

This Stopbadware blog post has more info…

All clear now!…

Apparently I’m hosting dodgy content

by Sean on Feb.18, 2008, under Tech, Web

I just performed a quick search on Google for a couple of keywords I knew appeared on my website and discovered the following:

Google Error

Apparently, the information about building a traffic shaper may harm your computer if you view it!  Err, I think not!  I’ve submitted a review request to Google and StopBadware.org to figure out WTFs happening here.

Testing Windows Live Writer

by Sean on May.31, 2007, under Software, Tech, Web

This is just a quick test post written using the new Windows Live Writer beta.

As I’m writing this, I’m looking at a WYSIWYG view of pretty much what my post will look like on the site – Complete with CSS styles etc applied.

Windows_Live_Writer_Beta

Seems pretty funky and so far is much nicer to use than the Wordpress built-in editor.

Want to sound like you work at CTU?

by Sean on Jan.25, 2007, under Tech, Web

Gordon’s just sent me the URL of quite probably the best ringtone site I’ve visited (probably because I dont recall ever visiting a ringtone site)

Are you sad enough to want to reproduce that distinctive CTU ringtone from the TV series ‘24′ on your mobile phone?

Well, I am. So I worked out the RTTTL code needed to get it on my little Nokia 8210.

But that was just the start of the story. Ever since I posted the code here back in 2003, along with the reference samples I used in order to work it out, a lot of equally sad people have sent me versions of the ringtone in different formats.

So here they are, for all your hey-look-at-me-I’m-Jack-Bauer needs

http://www.ccir.ed.ac.uk/~jad/ringtone.html

I should probably get out more…
